When Nature Speaks: Heirs

WHEN NATURE SPEAKS. HEIRS What will remain of the natural world for those who come after us? When Nature Speaks: Heirs explores the relationship between humanity and nature through the idea of inheritance - not simply as something we receive, but as something placed in our care. At the centre of the exhibition is a fundamental shift in perspective. Humanity is not presented as separate from, or superior to, the natural world. Instead, the exhibition considers human life as part of an intricate ecological system in which every action has consequences, and in which survival depends upon relationships that are often invisible until they begin to disappear. Five emblematic species of the Caucasus provide a recurring point of reference. Across the exhibition they emerge as physical presences, traces, memories and symbols, opening wider questions about vulnerability, resilience, coexistence and loss. Working across installation, sculpture, textiles, ceramics and mixed media, the participating artists approach these questions from markedly different perspectives. Grass grows through shattered glass; an empty cocoon becomes a vessel for absence and possibility; a wolf’s call transforms into roots and cultural ornament; animals gather beneath a household blanket in search of shelter; an hourglass measures disappearance; a chessboard turns every human move into an ecological consequence. Other works turn to what remains after presence has gone: an unraveling textile evokes both an endangered animal and the cultural memory attached to it; tracks gradually disappear from a surface; the body carries animal imagery as a form of protection and inherited power. Together, these gestures create an exhibition concerned as much with memory as with ecology. Heirs also considers nature and culture as inseparable forms of inheritance. Animals and landscapes have shaped stories, symbols, materials, rituals and identities across generations. When a species or habitat disappears, what is lost is therefore not only biological. Part of a cultural vocabulary can disappear with it. Yet the exhibition does not treat loss as inevitable. Running through the works is another possibility: that vulnerability can produce care, adaptation can become resilience, and awareness can still lead to action. The title ultimately turns the question towards us. We are all heirs to a living world shaped long before our arrival. What remains unresolved is what kind of world will inherit us. Every species carries a future. Only one can choose to protect it. Idea by Leyla Aliyeva Curated by Emin Mammadov
